Background of the Study

Online political mobilization has transformed the landscape of civic participation, particularly in urban centers like Port Harcourt. Civic movements now utilize digital platforms to galvanize support, disseminate information, and drive political engagement. This study examines the effectiveness of online mobilization strategies employed by a civic movement in Port Harcourt. Through social media campaigns, online petitions, and digital forums, the movement aims to increase voter engagement and influence public policy (Ibe, 2023). The integration of digital tools in political mobilization facilitates rapid communication and the mobilization of diverse groups, transcending traditional geographical limitations. However, while online mobilization presents opportunities for increased engagement, challenges such as digital misinformation, low digital literacy among certain demographics, and the fleeting nature of online interactions remain. This research employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate how online mobilization translates into tangible political action. By analyzing engagement metrics, participation trends, and voter feedback, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of the role of digital mobilization in enhancing voter engagement. The findings aim to offer practical recommendations for civic movements seeking to leverage online tools for sustained political impact (Ibe, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing trend of online political mobilization, there is limited evidence on its effectiveness in fostering sustained voter engagement within civic movements in Port Harcourt. While digital platforms offer the potential for rapid mobilization, the translation of online activities into active political participation remains ambiguous (Ibe, 2023). Additionally, challenges such as the spread of misinformation and the superficial nature of some online interactions can undermine the movement’s objectives. This study seeks to investigate the direct impact of online mobilization efforts on voter engagement, addressing the gap in empirical data regarding the effectiveness of digital strategies in achieving long-term political involvement. By clarifying these issues, the research aims to enhance the understanding of digital mobilization’s role in civic movements and its implications for voter participation (Ibe, 2024).
